Active hexose correlated compound (AHCC) is one of a number of evidence-based, non-conventional therapies that can heal the cancer survivor

Living with an “incurable” cancer since 1994 (Multiple Myeloma) and more than 10 years of cancer research have taught me that most cancers patients and survivors do not benefit from an all or nothing approach to cancer management. Treating multiple myeloma as well as other cancers is not strictly conventional/traditional or nonconventional/nontraditional- at least in my experience.

To be clear, HPV is “associated with” multiple myeloma. While studies confirm that  HPV (warts) increases the risk of multiple myeloma, there is no discussion that HPV causes MM.

I never thought much about my warts. They never really bothered me much. However once I learned that HPV (warts) increases the risk of multiple myeloma (my cancer), and that AHCC has been shown to eradicate HPV, I decided to supplement with AHCC. While I’ll never know for certain if my AHCC supplementation eradicated my HPV, I have been in complete remission from my MM since 1999.

Active hexose correlated compound (AHCC) is one of a number of evidence-based, non-conventional therapies that can heal the MM patient. According to the articles linked and excerpted below AHCC is a nutritional supplement that can

  •  increase natural killer cell activity,
  •  improved the prognosis of patients with liver cancer,
  •  ease the side effects of chemotherapy enhancing the patients QOL and finally
  • possibly eradicate HPV in patients.

Whether you undergo surgery to debulk a tumor, undergo toxic chemotherapy to treat your multiple myeloma and  possibly weakening your immune system, you will benefit from evidence-based, non-conventional therapies.

Mushroom extract, AHCC, helpful in treating HPV

“A Japanese mushroom extract appears to be effective for the eradication of human papillomavirus (HPV), according to a pilot clinical trial. Ten HPV-positive women were treated orally with the extract, AHCC (active hexose correlated compound) once daily for up to six months. Five achieved a negative HPV test result — three with confirmed eradication after stopping AHCC — with the remaining two responders continuing on the study….”

Prognostic improvement of patients with advanced liver cancer after active hexose correlated compound (AHCC) treatment.

“Recently, AHCC was found to improve the prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma patients following surgical treatment. We investigated whether AHCC could prolong survival and improve the prognosis of patients with advanced liver cancer…Patients in the AHCC treated-group had a significantly prolonged survival when compared to the control group by Mann-Whitney test (95% CI, p = 0.000). Quality of life in terms of mental stability, general physical health status, and ability to have normal activities were significantly improved after 3 months of AHCC treatment when tested using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test..

This study suggests that AHCC intake could prolong the survival and improve the prognosis of patients with advanced liver cancer and delay the gradual decline of their physiological status.

Reduction of Adverse Effects by a Mushroom Product, Active Hexose Correlated Compound (AHCC) in Patients With Advanced Cancer During Chemotherapy-The Significance of the Levels of HHV-6 DNA in Saliva as a Surrogate Biomarker During Chemotherapy.

“These findings suggest that salivary HHV-6 levels may be a good biomarker of QOL in patients during chemotherapy, and that AHCC may have a beneficial effect on chemotherapy-associated adverse effects and QOL in patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy…”

“Patients who learn that they have HPV … are understandably frustrated because all we can do is monitor them for the abnormal changes associated with cancer. What we need is a safe, effective treatment for HPV before the cancer occurs”

According to research, “In the United States,Human papillomavirus is the most common sexually transmitted illness. About 70 percent of adults who are sexually active will contract the virus during their lifetimes…” Not only did I contract the HPV virus but I also was diagnosed with one of the cancers that HPV increases the risk of.

 

I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in early 1994. I didn’t know it at the time but I also had the Human papillomavirus. While I can’t say that my MM was caused by Human papillomavirus I can say that HPV increased my risk of MM.

If I remember correctly I learned about AHCC possibly clearing the Human papillomavirus in about 2010. Like the study linked and excerpted below explains, I supplemented with AHCC for about six months. While my experience is hardly scientific, I no longer have the HPV virus and I have not relapsed from my MM.

Please keep in mind that I live an evidence-based, non-conventional, anti-MM lifestyle through nutrition, supplementation, detox., and other therapies. I will not chalk up not relapsing from MM solely from my AHCC supplementation. However I do think that if you have the Human papillomavirus virus you should supplement with AHCC.

Hi David

I hope you’re well.

I had suspected myeloma in November last year, I had asked for repeat bloods last month, as my GP had not arranged any follow up. The results show that I have high, above reference range Serum Kappa light chain level, results as follows:
The results were:

1 serum kappa light chain level – 23.62 mg/L – reference range 3.30-19.40

Serum lama light chain level – within reference range – normal

Se Kappa: labda light chain ration – within reference range – normal

I watched a tutorial video and these results indicate abnormal cells / cancer.

My GP got the results 11 days ago, but hasn’t followed up with me yet, so I’m glad I asked the doctors receptionist for a copy of the blood test results.

I had ovarian cancer in 2017/2018, had surgery and no recurrence to date.

I run a cancer support group on Telegram, link above, but I don’t know much about myeloma. One of our members shared a link to your website on the support group, its amazing how we all end up so connected!

I haven’t been formally diagnosed yet, but if the tutorial I watched is right, I have some sort of abnormal cell growth. I’ve had a painful shoulder since last year, it made sleeping uncomfortable, but the pain settled down to a dull ache, so I didn’t think it was anything to be concerned about.

Is there anything specific I should do right away, anything that is specific to myeloma?

I already take a range of supplements, but not as many as when I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Here’s a list of what I’m doing now:

– Intermittent fasting -16/8 (not every day, but as many days as I can, sometimes I wake up really hungry and feel sick, so I will have breakfast on those days.
– Vitamin D3 / K2 / Magnesium / Boron:

– D3 50,000 iu a day
– K2 (MK-7) 600 mcg a day
– K2 (MK-4) not sure of dose
– Magnesium – 1 standard capsule a day
– Boron – 9 – 12 mg a day

– NAC
– Selenium
– B12
– B complex

I am also vegan, but a few days ago I decided to start eating some meat again, although all I’ve ate so far is some cottage cheese and kefir (I had a course of antibiotics last week for a UTI).

What do you think about going vegan, cutting out all animal protein for people with cancer? I’ve been vegan since I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, there is some evidence that it helps, one doctor said that animal protein turns on and off the growth of cancer, like turning on and off a light switch! That doctor was a GP and wrote a book called:

You are welcome to join my telegram group, its a small group and we focus on evidence based alternatives, as well as conventional treatment. I’m not a supporter of chemotherapy for ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer becomes chemotherapy resistant really fast, survival rates in the UK, where I am are poor, most patients have 2 recurrences within 5 years of diagnosis.

I’m so happy to have found someone who has used alternatives to treat myeloma, it’s not a cancer I hear about often on Lets Talk Cancer.

I’ll read though your website and look at all the resources you’ve provided. Thank you so much for all your hard work and effort.

If there is anything you think I should do with regard supplements, alternative treatments, conventional treatments, or diet and lifestyle changes right now, please let me know.

    It certainly sounds as though you are working hard at being healthy. As for supplements in the UK, does Amazon deliver to you all? The key to your health where MM is concerned is to get a specific diagnosis. Having some of your blood work out of the normal range may or may not mean MM or perhaps pre-mm or other forms of monoclonal gammopathies.

Hi David!

I was diagnosed with human papilloma, and I underwent a laser cauterization procedure, but after 3 weeks it started to appear in the anal area again. The problem is that I have it on the anal level and inside as well. And I have HIV, but it’s been a month since I was treated for it. Can I take AHCC? Please help

    While the research does cite AHCC supplementation as clearing HPV, I do not know if the timing of it relative to other therapies makes a difference. Sorry I can’t provide more information.

I was diagnosed with Cervical Cancer in April 2022. I took Radiation and Chemo Treatments for most of September and 3 Weeks in October. I was declared free of Cancer on December 14, 2022, just 6 days ago . Today I was reading Dr. Pescatori’s book about Cancer and he suggested AHCC, as one of the supplements. While looking for more info about AHCC, I found your site. My question is if HPV causes Cervical Cancer, then do I have HPV without knowing it? and do I need to take AHCC to eradicate it?

What do you recommend for a patient with liver cancer? My dad was diagnosed last month with the beginning stages and is taking a pill for treatment. We just lost my mom in August of last year to cancer she had stage 4 lung and brain. I want to try hard to keep my dad around longer. So any advice would be great thanks

    Hi Angela,

    I am sorry to learn of your dad’s liver cancer diagnosis and I am sorry for your loss of your mom. Lung cancer is tough. While liver cancer can be a difficult cancer to treat, the five year average survival varies between 11% (stage 4 at diagnosis) to 31% (when diagnosed in the early stages).

    My advice for those diagnosed with aggressive cancers such as liver cancer, is for the patient to pursue all evidence-based therapies at his/her disposal. That means conventional (FDA approved), complementary, and integrative therapies. An example of a conventional therapy would be surgery to surgically remove a tumor on your dad’s liver. A example of a complementary therapy would be a diet shown to reduce your dad’s risk of cancer. And I’ve linked an example of integrative therapies below.

I’m inquiring for my husband since as a RN, i can understand the specifics better than he can. He suffers from “smoldering” pre MM. He did not tolerate chemo very well and so he stopped it after 4 cycles. Since then he goes to the cancer center for follow up and he has remained “stable” for over a year but….this is hanging over our heads because it will rear its ugly head one day, perhaps soon. I am very interested in AHCC as a way of possibly irradicating these cells before that happens. Because it is in the bone marrow, I wasn’t sure how it would work then I saw MM mentioned as being benefited. Sorry for the length of this post but a little guidance would be much appreciated.     Hi Lee,

    I am sorry to learn of your husband’s SMM diagnosis. Great to read though that he is stable. He is fortunate to have an RN for a caregiver.

    Regarding your concern that SMM may become frank MM someday and that MM is a difficult type of cancer, several things. According to the studies linked in the post you came in on, AHCC can eradicate HPV and possibly liver cancer but has no direct effect on MM. I myself took AHCC after I was diagnosed with MM because I read that HPV increased the risk of MM. I thought I should take AHCC in order to get rid of my HPV.

    My point is that AHCC effect on MM is through HPV (sort of indirect…).

    More directly, I know of other pre-MM patients (both MGUS and SMM) who have lived with pre-MM for years. Yes, SMM does have a greater risk of progressing to MM. However I believe strongly in the idea that both MGUS and SMM can be managed.

    The purpose for creating the Pre-MM Cancer Coaching program was for both MGUS and SMM patients to take those supplements, nutrition and lifestyle therapies that have been shown by research to reduce the risks of frank MM. Though I have full blown MM, I believe I have kept my MM in CR by living most of these therapies myself.

Hi David,

My 8-year daughter was diagnosed with lymphoma stage-1 just 3-weeks ago.
She is now undergoing chemo treatment.
I am planning to feed her AHCC after chemo to prevent recurrence.
Is it ok to feed to kid?
I read some article it is safe to give a kid.
And AHCC is good to prevent any kind of cancer coming back?

    All I can tell you is what my personal experience with AHCC is and what the studies say. Neither source speaks to AHCC supplementation for 8 year olds. Studies do cite AHCC to boost natural killer cells and may enhance your daughter’s quality of life during chemo treatment. Further, according to the studies AHCC can eradicate the HPV virus.

Hi David

I am a twice primary cancer survivor (early detection lung and mammogram “invisible” lobular breast cancer followed by bi-lateral mastectomy and radiation of one side only).
I am currently on a “slow” chemo by taking estrogen suppressing medication Arimidex that is thinning my hair, making my joints ache and I am convinced – bringing on early Alzheimer…I am 69-years old

My question is where can I buy GENUINE, Made in Japan, AHCC supplements here in America as I want to boost my immune system? Thank you

I was told about AHCC helping kill the HPV virus. I have high risk hpv and was told not to worry. I’m not worried but i am very into supplements and holistic healing. Is there truth that the vitamin clears certain viruses or cancers from your body? Thank you! 🙂

    Yes, according to the study linked below, AHCC supplementation clears the HPV virus. AHCC is not a vitamin. It is a mushroom extract. In the blog post you came in on I talked about HPV being a risk factor for several cancers. For example I had the HPV virus when I was diagnosed with a blood cancer called multiple myeloma. No conclusive evidence that I got MM because of my HPV virus but the virus does increase risks.

      I have mgus igg kappa and my mspike has gone up a lot and I’m VERY freaked out and scared! I’m only 36 with 5 kids and want to grow old with my husband and watch my kids grow up. Is there anything I can do?

        I am sorry to read of your MGUS diagnosis. While 36 is young to be diagnosed with this form of pre-MM, keep in mind that 1) you have pre-cancer, not a full-blown diagnosis of cancer. Your prognosis is much different, much better. Secondlly, yes, there are many evidence-based, non-toxic therapies shown to reduce your risk of MM.

        Let’s start at the beginning… what was your m-spike at diagnosis? What is your m-spike now? Are you experiencing any symptoms such as bone pain, fatigue or nerve damage? Though MGUS is supposed to be “asymptomatic,” many patients experience MM like symptoms. Do you have blood work that you can send me? I will email you directly through your email address as well.

My son is undergoing adjuvant chemotherapy for a brain tumor. He is having a lot of difficulty with the treatments and we may not finish. He cannot swallow pills. Can Ahcc be taken outside of the capsule? Thank you.

    I would have to research your question more but I would think that AHCC capsules could be pulled apart and dumped into a liquid of some kind. I don’t think AHCC would enhance the flavor but I think your son would have an easier time swallowing.

Hi David, I was wondering if you know others who have CLL and if AHCC helps them. I was diagnosed in 2014 at Stage 0, but it has progressed since then. I do not plan to have conventional treatment (if I can help it). Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Linda-

    I am sorry to read of your CLL diagnosis. Yes, if you can slow or halt the progress of your CLL then you will not have to consider conventional treatment for many, many years.

    As for AHCC, there is modest anecdotal evidence that AHCC can halt CLL progression.

    However there are other non-toxic therapies that have been researched that show efficacy halting/slowing CLL.

    I myself supplement with both egcg (green tea) and curcumin (turmeric) for my blood cancer, multiple myeloma. I live an anti-MM lifestyle through supplementation, nutrition, bone heath, etc.

    How old are you? Are you experiencing any CLL symptoms? I don’t mean to sound nosey. I am just trying to get a clearer picture of your situation.

      Hi David, unfortunately I was diagnosed w/ Stage IIB Small Cell Cervical Carcinoma hpv related cancer June 2016. I declined conventional chemo radiation treatment due to the poor prognosis and side effects attached to chemo and radiation as I have a young child at home. Also I wanted to give my body the help it needed to defend itself. I’ve read wonderful things about ahcc and am wondering are there any underlying specifics I should be warned of. I’m excited to start taking ahcc. However currently looking for brand recommendations.

        I am sorry to read of your cervical cancer diagnosis. I understand your decision to decline conventional chemo and radiation.

        To answer your question “am wondering are there any underlying specifics I should be warned of.” I know of no issues or side effects that result from AHCC. I have copy and pasted some info from the Consumerlab.com site about AHCC. I linked the brand of AHCC that I take. Unfortunately Consumerlab.com has not done a study on AHCC supplements (I rely on this organization). So the best I can come up with is that Life Extension products are routinely evaluated and approved by Consumerlab.com. So I go with the brand of AHCC that LE sells. LE does not make their own AHCC- they simply sell Source Naturals. My thinking therefore is that Source Naturals is a good brand.

        If you are going the non-conventional path I would consider addition supplements such as curcumin, others.

        A typical dose of AHCC is 3 grams daily, often divided into 3 doses.

        Safety

        While use of AHCC has not been associated with any severe adverse effects, this substance has not undergone thorough safety testing. Safety in young children, pregnant or nursing women, or people with severe liver or kidney disease has not been established.

          Thank you for responding to my post. Yes, I also included the curcumin supplement with a Source Naturals Women’s Life Force Multi which has an abundance of vitamins attached inside. When it all lays together, my regime will include ahcc, multi vitamin, turmeric, boswellia, vegan diet, no processed sugars., breathing exercises and a 30 min walk daily. So far things are going in a good direction meaning minimal metastasis, good energy, lessened pain,
          I’m quite pleased and anxious to start ahcc. I also do acv/bs in the meantime. But not too strict on that

          Oh I forgot to mention, I’m on a iron supplement for low iron anemia so I’m taking Garden of Life Healthy Blood on that note.
